The Tutoring Program at the Downtown Eastside Neighbourhood House provides children ages 6 to 12 with a safe, supportive, and structured environment for learning after school. This program is part of the province-wide School’s Out initiative supported by United Way British Columbia, designed to offer developmentally appropriate academic support and mentorship to children from priority populations. At the heart of the program is the belief that every child deserves access to quality educational resources and positive role models—especially during the vulnerable hours following the end of the school day. Through group learning, emotional support, and culturally inclusive guidance, the program empowers children to thrive academically and socially.

Led by Shaista, our dedicated tutor and program lead, children meet weekly in a group setting designed to foster curiosity, cooperation, and community. Each session is carefully planned to include interactive lessons, hands-on activities, and tailored support in core subjects like reading, writing, and math. To help children stay nourished and focused, healthy snacks are provided at every session. This is not a drop-in program—it operates on a registration-only basis to ensure consistency and stronger connections among participants.
The Tutoring Program takes place at our accessible community site and follows a structure that promotes both academic achievement and well-rounded development across five key areas: identity development, health and wellness, social and relational well-being, community and land stewardship, and skills and competencies. We are also proud to welcome volunteers into this space. Volunteers play a vital role in supporting learning activities, encouraging children, and helping create a warm and welcoming environment. Their presence contributes to stronger outcomes for our kids while also strengthening community connections across generations.

Due to limited capacity, the Tutoring Program operates on a registration-only basis. Families must enroll their children in advance to secure a spot. If you are interested in learning more, visiting the program, or registering your child, please reach out to us at kidskitchen@dteshouse.ca

At the Downtown Eastside Neighbourhood House, Arts Umbrella delivers weekly creative workshops on Wednesday from 3:30 to 5:00 PM for children ages 7 to 12. These sessions focus on visual arts and are designed to encourage self-expression, imagination, and hands-on learning.

Neighbourhood House Visit
